The Transsexual Flight Attendant

Everyone, with conflict of interests, are pushing Matthaus into the corner, how is he going to bail himself out of this plight?
 
 Matthaus,the CEO of Catty Airlines, is facing a critical ethical dilemma. In the company, there was found a transgendered employee working. Jojo, a flight attendant of the company, was found to be a man before a transsexual operation that changed her sex 10 years ago. Whilst the secret has been discovered in the company, there are voices from different stakeholders.

The majority of the employees in the company feel uncomfortable working with Jojo, they united into a strong force  pushing the company to take actions. Expressing their feelings to Matthaus, they asked for a transfer of Jojo's job to the administration department which needs less interaction with colleagues and customers. The employees are also against Jojo in fear that she would  harm the image of everyone working in the company; they are afraid that they would be stereotyped.


However, during the meeting with the Board of Directors, a serious concern on the reputation of the company was raised. The BOD worried that the company might get into trouble with sex discrimination if  'her' job was shifted. Also, as there were no similar law cases in Hong Kong as reference to follow, it would be risky for the company to take any actions upon the issue. Therefore, the BOD objcted to the idea of shifting Jojo's position.



The increase in concern of the public also attracted media attention, a press conference was held . In the conference, Matthaus was asked whether the company would shift the position of the transgender which may violate the Sex Discrimination Ordinance. Also, the company was requested to declare its position clearly on the issue, whether it accepted transgender workers or not.


After struggling for some time, Matthaus fianally decided to shift Jojo to the administrative position. At the end, the issue was put to the court. Jojo sued the company for discriminating 'her' sexual status which didn't affect 'her' performance. Matthaus is the one who needed to defend the company's decision on shifting 'her' job position. He should argue for the company that the decision of shifting Jojo's position was not based on discrimination.


In such embarrassing situation, Matthaus is stressful in making good balance between the employees' morale and the company image. Is it ethical to put the “victim” away so that everyone at work would feel better and the victim would feel less stressful? Or it is good to do nothing and keep the image of the company of sex orientation diversity?

Theory

Business nowadays can hardly survive by “doing business” alone. CEOs must get the company involved in Business Ethics, which comprises principles and standards defining what is right or wrong and guide the behaviour in the business world(). However, the world is not black or white; sometimes it is hard to define whether it is right or wrong. What is right or wrong in business ethics is determined by the key stakeholders. Different moral philosophies become the basis for making ethical decisions.

People believe in teleology make decisions based on consequences. If an action taken would receive a desired result, then the action is morally acceptable and worth doing. In our case, if Matthaus is a teleologist, he would consider the result of both sides. Once Matthaus decides to transfer Jojo, he might put the company at risk of discrimination. However, if he does nothing on that, employee morale might drop thus harm the productivity of the company. Treats and paying employees well are the most significant factors affecting customers’ choice of company (Fleishman-Hillard; National Consumers League, 2007). Any of the decisions would have negative effects on the company's  image. Neither of them would help the company.

If Matthaus takes the deontology, which focus on the rights and intentions instead of consequences, he would make the decision regardless of the utility. He might probably reject to transfer Jojo as it may lead to discrimination. The basic human right should be respected for people with different sex orientation. Therefore, with this philosophy, Matthaus would turn down the request of other employees and remain Jojo in the same positions as long as Jojo's performance was not affected.

It is interesting to see there are no absolute right or wrong answers for ethical issues; it all depends on the value of the decision maker. According to the model of ethics, the link leads the sources of ethical guidance to an individual’s believe of ethic is called “Type I Ethics” and the link determines the consistence of an individual’s action and his/her belief is called “Type II Ethics”(Note week 4, PPT2-11). If one wants to enhance the link between the sources of ethical guidance, he/she needs to strengthen both Type I and as Type II Ethics.

Type I Ethics is the spirit of ethical behaviour, such as respect for human dignity, respect for basic rights, and good citizenship (Donaldson, 1996, p. 54). It is the same principle for the company to translate the core human values into core values for business (Donaldson, 1996, p. 54). However, only giving out spiritual ideas can hardly be specific enough to make sure employees work towards the company's desired behaviour. By strengthening Type II Ethics, the company can increase the consistency between employees’ behaviour and belief. It can then turn the ethical spirits into the actual behaviour measurement so that employees can clearly understand what behaviours are desired and ethical.

Conclusion
The ethical dilemma faced by Catty Airline is critical. It would negatively affetced the company's business if it is handled inappropriately. Whatever decisions the company made, it has to have strong and convincible explanations to protect the company. Other than focusing on how to handle the problem, it is more interesting to look at how to prevent or prepare for any similar cases coming out. It is more important for the company to have all employees working towards the same ethical belief as the company so as to reduce conflicts and dissatisfaction arisen from ethical dilemmas.

Brand Recognition of Global Brands

Globe-spanning Brands as a Sign of Globalization


Literally, Hong Kong people have been soaked in the world of brands and fashion when regards are given to their lifestyles – you can see: gorgeous cars like Mercedes Benz and BMW running on vast highways; long queues lining up outside Louis Vuitton and Hermes shop along Canton Road; patrons in McDonald’s having their Coca Cola and tapping on their iPhone; families celebrating occasions in Disneyland; and students working on assignments with the aid of Google on their HP laptops…

In fact, the appearance of global brands has formed part of the identity of Hong Kong as a globalized city. More importantly, the footprints of the global brands as well as consumer recognition towards the brands imply the process of globalization.

Brand Recognition – what is it as a Global Indicator?
In essence, brand is the identity of a company, or precisely of a product or service. To have consumers recognise a brand, the owning company should equip the brand with an identity so distinctive that it becomes unique. The identity should also be a reason for patronage so as to be a means to the end of building customer loyalty. To make brand recognition easily comparable, brand equity can be another perspective of looking at it in light of loyalty and brand awareness (Aaker, 1996).

In this blog, we made use of the “Best Global” annual report developed by Interbrand about rankings of global brands concerning brand equity and international management to see how brand recognition serves as a global indicator.

Interbrand was established in 1974 as a global brand consultancy. The "Best Global" is the annual report released by Interbrand on how the international brands manage their brand value.We have included data from 2007 to 2010 in our analysis. Each year, there are 100 global brands from different industries on the list of the report. We re-organized the brands on the list according to the sector they belong to and derived a chart showing the changes of brand value of different industries. Finally, based on the findings, we tried to investigate the relationship between globalization process and brand value.

One should note that here the change of brand value in an industry has a global significance as we grouped global brands originated from different countries together according to their industry. By doing so, we want to see how events happened in one country could impact the global economy as a whole.

From the above diagram, we can observe a stable increase in the brand value for beverages, electronics, luxury and restaurants industry. However, both automotive and financial services suffered huge drop in brand value from 2008 to 2009.

This was the time when financial tsunami attacked companies worldwide (Brutto, 2010). Still at the forefront of our memory, the financial crisis was initiated in the U.S. by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, which then influenced companies globally.

The 2008 Financial Tsunami caused by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers brought about negative impacts all over the world.  Even worse, it was revealed that the Lehman executives regularly used cosmetic accounting gimmicks at the end of each quarter to make its finances appear less shaky than they really were (Trumbull, 2010). Most banks, including those prestigious in the minds of investors and the general public have expressed similar problems. Most were either under Government control or fighting off collapse. This greatly undermined customer confidence on financial services providers worldwide, leading to tremendous drop in brand value of major financial institutions especially investment banks which are renowned for and characterized by their “high-risk, high-return” characteristic. When most of the financial institutions have fallen short of the expectations of many, loss of confidence and trust in the whole industry is likely to be resulted.

Harley Davidson had a disastrous year in 2008, having a drop of nearly half of its brand value

Financial services have been playing an important role in contributing to the prosperity of capitalist society, and as a consequence of the breakdown of the financial sector, the general public experienced a significant drop in their purchasing power as well as consumption demand.Consumers shifted their consumption from luxury goods to goods that match their affordability, resulting in the tremendous drop in brand values of the automotive industry.

Economy is integrated as a whole (Chase-Dunn, Kawano, & Nikitin, p. 1).
From the above two examples, we can see one important feature of globalized economy is the free flow of capital. When money can flow without the constraint of national borders, any change in one countries’ business environment, e.g. interest rate would trigger off significant influx or efflux of hot money and other capital investments. As a result, not only would the independencies among countries be increased, but the relationship of different industries operating around the world would also become more interdependent, which make the world’s economic system more complex than ever.


Brand Recognition Highlights International Management
In the Interbrand report, there are however sectors which could withstand the impact of global financial tsunami. It can then be worthwhile to scrutinize what contributed to such endurance in a bid to identify ways to manage globalization risks.

For fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, it suffered less impact from the financial crisis. The products sold in the industry are basic necessities and the brands included are highly globalized.

Thanks to the product nature, consumer demand for basic necessities that FMCG sells respectively are relatively inelastic: even the global economy is bad, people cannot delay their consumption of necessities to which hardly anything can substitute.

For luxury brands, it also suffered less harm compared to automotive industry. In the wake of the financial crisis, the pull is greatest in Asia and emerging economies (Brutto, 2010, p. 512). The maintenance of brand values may be a result of the strong growth in the Asia market, especially the China market where the purchasing power of a great number of people was still kept at a high level and maintained its rising trend (having 26.6% growth in consumer expenditure and 27.5% growth in annual disposable income in 2008) (Euromonitor International, 2011) despite economic downturn worldwide.

The increasingly wealthy middle class in China

“The rise of the middle class in a few large global nations is driving growth in trade” (Brutto, 2010, p. 513), China is a clear example. A study by TNS indicated that “ attitudes to luxury brands among China’s aspiring middle class is overwhelmingly impressive” (KPMG, 2007) and most surveyed respondents showed a strong intention to purchase luxury brands within the next year.[1] The data revealed the fact that not only is there a huge surge in wealthy people in China, their willingness to purchase big-ticket products are on the rise, driven by “the appetite for status and the comforts and trappings of luxury products”as the “perceptions of higher quality and the far stronger perception that they are setting the trends help them establish a competitive advantage over the competition (Hollis, 2009, p. 14). China is playing an increasingly important role in the world economic stage, recently replaced Japan as the world’s #2 economy (Brutto, 2010, p. 513). Although the whole world seemed to be cutting their consumptions on luxuries,the huge economic influence of China can make the increase in brand values of luxury goods possible.



Although fast-moving consumer goods and luxury products can be two very different sectors in terms of customer relationship management, positioning strategies and the marketing mix, especially price and people (, i.e. the services included in the offering and hence the premium customers are expected to pay), they exhibit one important commonality in the context of international management, that is consistency.

To be strong in the global economy in terms of a brand’s value in the eye of customers, the provision of consistent customer experience is vitally important. The main point here is that  in order for brands to succeed globally, they have to clearly identify and present an image to the customers they serve so that they show a distinctive identity as the start of building customer loyalty and can secure their profitability during economic bad times. To this end, the most direct means is providing globally consistent customer experience.

Thanks to the product nature, the offerings of FMCG and Luxury Retail are innately standardized without much need for making adaptation because customers around the globe are ought to be sharing the same wishes: need for living from FMCG; and status symbol, Luxury Retail. As a result, brands coming from these two sectors can have more stable development of their brand value and hence, endurance to global economic depression.

Moreover, to maintain the consistency of customer experience worldwide, brands should be aware that “what it does in one country will impact how [customers] view its [offering] globally” (Cheng, 2010). When a brand goes global successfully, its image is going to be recognized globally (that is what we discussed, the origin of global brand equity). With such an image, expectations from customers or other parties like competitors and even governments would be to a certain extent the same. This is one way of visualizing globalization.

Conculsion: Visualizing Globalization through Brands
When brand recognition goes further to become a symbol of national culture, expansion to global market may face political risks concerning cultural intrusion. Foreign governments who see the culture is conflictive to their local political structure may impose stringent regulations and scrutiny on the brands. Foreign political forces do not only impede a brand from extending its footprint by making the business environment prohibitively complex, but it also intervenes with the process of globalization. In this case, how the breath of brand recognition changes is certainly another way of visualizing globalization.

Group Experiential Exercise 1

We are Kelly, Herman, Denise and Emily (Left to Right) from CityU, taking the class of International Managment!



First, let us introduce ourselves to all of you  :)

Kelly: 
Hello~ Being the final year student in HRM, it is so interesting for me to start my blogging about what I have learnt. It is hard to give myself the most suitable descriptions, as all my friends have it differently. However, there is one thing for sure; I am a determined people who can be rather tough and uneasy. Haha! There are not many people saying themselves are uneasy, right? Unless there is good reasons, it is hard to stop me from my decisions. That's why some people may think I am tough, stubborn, and kind of uneasy. In another round, I like to observe people. They told me loads with their small, unintended gestures. That's why I love this steam, which keep my enjoyment of meeting different people.

Herman: 
Hi all! I am a final year student major in Human Resources Managment. Like other Capricorns, I am calm, cautious, and always set high standards for myself, while I may not be as confident as Capricorns are supposed to be sometimes. So I tend to be anxious and unhappy with personal failures. However,  I am used to keeping my worries to myself, and very often, you can see my smiling face before the crowd as I like to build up positivity around for cheering people and myself.

Hello everyone! I am  a year 3 student majoring in Human Resources Management. Having the curiosity to know better about the world, I'm prepared to capitalize on every opportunity to learn and explore. I want to go out of my comfort zone and open my mind to a variety of things in different parts of the world. Open to new ideas and receptive to diversified perspectives, I enjoy making friends and interacting with people with different values and from different cultural backgrounds[that's probably one of the reasons why I'm drawn to the course International Management:)] I hope I can make the most of my university life to make it as fruitful and fulfilling as it can be!

Of course, if there are additional topics such as Anti-Bribery Pratice in MNCs, how some countries resist globalization in order to preserve their unique cultures or the influence of globalization on the spread of one language to another, that will also be great!

MYTH to think:
People's consumption patterns are getting globalised.
